What’s the news?

On April 5th, 2023, FedEx announced plans to consolidate FedEx Ground and FedEx Express into a single entity to streamline operations and improve competitiveness against rivals UPS and Amazon. The integrated delivery business is expected to handle all deliveries starting June 2024. This is part of the company's plan to cut $4 billion in permanent costs by the end of the 2025 fiscal year.

Why does it matter?

Currently, FedEx Ground pickups and deliveries are operated by a network of independent contractors, similar to a franchise model. FedEx Express (the expedited overnight, 2-day, international, etc. shipping unit) is operated directly by FedEx employees.

Today’s newly announced structure will implement a "hybrid" model of employees and contractors for deliveries while remaining non-unionized.
